3W Red LED Chip on Aluminum Star Heatsink
The 3W red light SMD LED chip is mounted on a 20mm diameter aluminum star-shaped heatsink, designed to efficiently dissipate heat and extend the diode's lifespan. It is the ideal solution for DIY projects, replacements in spotlights, or custom decorative and signaling lighting constructions. Available individually or in sets, the chip connects directly to a compatible LED driver.

How it works and how to install
The LED chip is soldered directly onto the star-shaped aluminum PCB, which acts as the primary heatsink — the heat generated by the LED junction quickly transfers to the metal surface. For operation, connect the positive and negative terminals (marked on the board) to a 3W LED driver with an output voltage of 3.2–3.6V and a current of 500–700mA. For projects requiring additional cooling, the aluminum heatsink can be glued or screwed onto a larger heatsink using thermal paste.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate driver or can I power it directly with 12V?
Yes, you need a dedicated LED driver — direct power at 12V or 5V without a resistor or driver will destroy the chip. Use a 3W driver with 3.2–3.6V / 700mA output.
Is the 20mm heatsink sufficient or do I need an additional heatsink?
For intermittent use or lower currents (500mA), the integrated heatsink is sufficient. At maximum continuous current of 700mA, attachment to an additional heatsink with thermal paste is recommended for optimal lifespan.
Can this LED chip be used outdoors or in humid conditions?
The chip does not have certified IP protection as such — for outdoor use, it must be integrated into a light fixture with an adequate protection rating (minimum IP65).

Inspired to create a chair where the back and arms are moulded from a single piece of plywood, Hecht and Colin describe employing a process similar to that a tailor might use to cut a pattern in fabric. This approach resulted in the beautiful structure wherein the moulded back and arms component is supported by a simple A-frame wood dowel construction. One of the benefits of this design is an increase in comfort due to natural movement in the plywood back.
