How it works and how to install
The capacitor stores and releases energy when the motor starts, providing the additional current needed to overcome initial mechanical inertia. It connects in parallel with the motor's auxiliary winding, via two wires: brown (phase) and blue (neutral). Installation takes less than 10 minutes: turn off the power, disconnect the faulty capacitor (if any), connect the wires of the new capacitor according to the diagram on the motor's label, then secure the capacitor with clamps or a metal bracket.
Operation is instantaneous: at each start, the capacitor creates an electrical phase shift that generates the starting torque, then continues to support the smooth operation of the motor. Lifespan: 10,000 hours at 400V, 3,000 hours at 450V, according to reliability classes B and C.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my motor's capacitor is faulty?
Classic signs: the motor doesn't start at all, makes strange noises at startup, overheats excessively, or trips the circuit breaker. Test with a multimeter set to capacitance — if the reading differs by more than 10% from the nominal value (7.5uF), the capacitor needs to be replaced.
Can I use an 8uF capacitor instead of 7.5uF?
Yes, a difference of up to 10% is acceptable and does not affect motor operation. It is important that the voltage of the new capacitor is equal to or greater than that of the original capacitor — never install a capacitor with a lower voltage.
How do I safely discharge a capacitor before replacement?
Always turn off the electrical power at the breaker box. Then short-circuit the two terminals of the capacitor with an insulated screwdriver or a 10kΩ resistor for 5 seconds — this eliminates any dangerous residual charge.

Inspired to create a chair where the back and arms are moulded from a single piece of plywood, Hecht and Colin describe employing a process similar to that a tailor might use to cut a pattern in fabric. This approach resulted in the beautiful structure wherein the moulded back and arms component is supported by a simple A-frame wood dowel construction. One of the benefits of this design is an increase in comfort due to natural movement in the plywood back.
