Passive POE Cable for Surveillance Cameras via UTP
The passive POE cable allows simultaneous transmission of video signal and power through a single UTP or FTP cable, eliminating the need for a separate power cable. It is a practical solution for installing IP or analog surveillance cameras where there are no power outlets near the mounting point. How it works and how to install it
The passive POE cable injects DC voltage onto the unused pairs of the UTP cable at the power source end and extracts it at the other end, where the camera is located. Installation requires no special tools: you connect the injector to the power source and to the switch or DVR, run a single UTP cable to the camera, then connect the splitter to the camera via the RJ45 plug and the 2.1 mm DC connector. The entire process takes a few minutes and does not involve modifications to the existing network.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work with any power supply or does it require a special one?
It works with any standard DC power supply with a 2.1 mm connector, including 12V power supplies commonly used in surveillance systems. A dedicated POE power supply is not necessary.
Can I use this passive POE cable with an active POE switch?
It is not recommended to combine it with active IEEE 802.3af/at POE switches, as voltage incompatibilities may occur. The product is intended exclusively for passive POE installations with separate DC sources.
What is the maximum UTP cable length it supports without signal loss?
For video transmission and power over passive POE cable, a maximum distance of 30-40 meters is recommended, depending on the wire gauge and the current consumed by the camera.

Inspired to create a chair where the back and arms are moulded from a single piece of plywood, Hecht and Colin describe employing a process similar to that a tailor might use to cut a pattern in fabric. This approach resulted in the beautiful structure wherein the moulded back and arms component is supported by a simple A-frame wood dowel construction. One of the benefits of this design is an increase in comfort due to natural movement in the plywood back.
